Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets

While it sounds desirable, completely solid wood kitchen cabinets aren’t the best idea.  As Young Furniture Manufacturing said about real wood vs plywood box construction , solid wood box construction is often unstable.

So I’ll focus instead on solid wood doors.  Several companies make doors that look just like they were made from solid wood, when in fact only the stiles and rails are wood.  The panel itself is some kind of laminate with either a veneer or just a wood looking sticker.

These are kind of a cross breed, but most people still call them laminate doors.

Solid wood doesn’t necessarily mean great though.  Here again, I’ll talk about panels.  Some solid wood doors have a square raised panel, and these are generally pretty beefy.  There is a difference between how manufacturers make their flat panel doors though.

Some make a flat panel door like this, with a 1/4″ or so piece of plywood for a panel.

And others make it like this, just like a square raised door, but with the panel turned around so that the flat side is out.

The second is an actual solid wood door, while the first one is not really, even though they’re sometimes called solid wood cabinet doors.  Be careful, and check manufacturer specs.  These can be found, usually, in the first section or two of a manufacturers spec book.
