Maple Knots, Kitchen vs Bath, 180fx, and Kitchen Design Software
Can maple cabinets have knots in them?
The answer to this is yes. In case anyone doesn't know, knots in a board are where branches were growing in the tree it was cut from.
What is the difference between kitchen and bath cabinets?
Well, if the two types cabinets in question are made by he same manufacturer, then the only difference would be the dimensions. I'll explain…
Kitchen base cabinets are generally 34 1/2" high and 24" deep. Bathroom base cabinets are usually shorter and shallower. This varies from one cabinet manufacturer to another, but generally bath base cabinets come 30-ish inches high by 18 or 21 inches deep. Some manufacturers offer these depths in a 34 1/2 inch high version as well. The more custom a semi-custom manufacturer leans, the more options there will be.
Wall cabinets in a bath catalog are generally the same dimensions as their kitchen counterparts, but there might be shallow (less than 12 inches) versions, cabinets with mirrors and lights on the sides, etc.
Others like Formica 180fx
This wasn't a question, but it sounds like someone is searching for another laminate that looks like stone. I've seen non yet, but I know Pionite has some new colors coming out in September. I would imagine that both Pionite and Wilsonart are scrambling for an answer to Formica's 180fx. I expect Formica will come out with some new 180fx colors too (I've heard nothing officially) just because six or seven isn't many to choose from.
What is the best cabinet program?
I'm guessing this person is looking for kitchen design software. I've only used 2020 on a regular basis. I crash it a LOT, and it's always during the rendering process. I've tried it with honking fast computers and tricked out video cards with the same results. I evaluated Prokitchen for a bit, but not enough to get familiar with it. Renderings are very important to me, since most of the customers I deal with are online; a rendering of their kitchen is the only thing I have to give them, so it has to be good. I didn't have the Prokitchen trial long enough to test this out and get any nice renderings.
As far as free design tools, there are some online put out by various cabinet manufacturers. Ikea has one that I've dorked around with. I just played with Merillat's new one. They revamped their site recently. I wasn't impressed, but maybe just didn't play with it long enough to give it a fair shake. I figure, though, that someone familiar with kitchen design software ought to be able to sit right down and bang out a kitchen in no time. This was not the case with Merillat's application. Just my $.02.
That's It
Those were all the queries that struck my fancy this week. Can't wait to see who flies through next week. Stay tuned.
